The current instructions are misleading and a source of considerable frustration for some users who log in only infrequently. To make matters worse, it appears that the site recognizes the email address and counts the attempt as a login failure, resulting in a lockout. This is a very simple fix. Please address it ASAP.

I agree - custom text in this area would be helpful.  We only use "Username" and the Email text is confusing to some when logging in. 

It would be great to remove the instruction to use 'email or username' since we seem to must use 'username' only.
