Use Preferred name in email notifications

Some students strongly prefer their nickname to show when they send a message to their peers; while the Inbox message does show the sender's preferred name, the email notification that goes out is hard coded to show the first name - can we change that to the Preferred name?

As of now, in many notifications, you can choose either preferred or first name BUT if someone has an empty preferred name it leaves it empty. So Susan Q will be "___ Q" if you choose the preferred name in the coding. This is especially important for our trans non-binary students as we are currently not able to both honor their identity while allowing other students to be called by their name. The code needs to switch to "first name" if "preferred name" is left empty in the system.

Makes sense and worth while to personalize our messaging better. If not different, we populate this field the same as first name. Not just for trans, fluid... I have noticed more and more students (and younger staff) have different preferred names.

This would be great to support our trans students who haven't yet had a legal name change!
