Ability to set default settings for Notifications

I would like a way for an admin to set the default notification settings (per role) so that parents can have notifications setup by default and just decide to opt out.

    Jessica,

Thank you for that update. I have a follow-up question that is semi-related. This idea was submitted in 2015. It is now 2022 and you commented that Blackbaud is performing its first round of notification updates. That seems like a large gap in time. Is there any sort of timeline we can refer to or at least documentation around the order in which updates are getting worked on?

We ran into some big questions and related challenges around this exact feature, so we won't be able to implement it in this first round of Notification updates. However, the work is still on our radar. We expect the new notifications experience to be live by the end of September!

@angela.addison@blackbaud.com What is the status of this? We are very interested!

Hi folks, in the new version of notifications that we're heading into EAP on we added a setting for admins to say whether a notification should be able to be opted out of or not. If they do not allow opt out then the notification will be automatically 'on' for anyone in the roles it's enabled for and if those users go to their preferences they will see a red (*) next to the ones that are mandatory and will get an error message if they try to deselect both methods of delivery. We included other enhancements as well - if you would like to test our the new version let me know. angela.addison@blackbaud.com

This would really be a HUGE lifesaver if this could change. When you have over 100 new students that you are enrolling each year x2 parents, it's a lot of manual tedious labor to have to go in and impersonate every single person to add their notifications. PLEASE consider putting the default as "on" and then people can self select to opt out. Or at the very minimum.... allow us to be able to "select all" when going into certain boxes to turn notifications on. Thank you!

This idea was created back in 2015, and I'm disappointed that with the number of votes and comments that it hasn't been tagged as "planned" or "for consideration". Parents of candidates go from receiving frequent notification emails in the Enrollment Management Process (where they didn't have to opt-in) to not receiving all notification emails in Student Information System once their candidate becomes a student. The notification options available to parents and students are very granular and wonderful, but they can be a bit overwhelming to the novice user. We REALLY want to be able to set certain notifications on by default for incoming students and parents, and then give users the ability to tweak the notification settings from there.

Agreed, this is hugely important, we went from a system that allowed for this to a system that put the onus on the parents to have to sign up, we feel like we have gone backwards, parents are frustrated.

This is very important for us as well.  The notification options in the ONSuite are wonderful, but they can be very granular and complicated to a new parent/student.  Being able to set these up for them in a default way and then allowing them to adjust form there would be very helpful.

The ability for the end user to customize approach is great BUT the way notifications are managed by the user feels like it is for a consumer. An education institution needs enterprise controls that can also provide the management of employee and student notifications.  This will make the implimentation easier. Highly needed.

This would be a great addition to the product, thanks!

This is SO important and would be so helpful in onboarding!

Agree with the comments below.  If nothing else, give schools the option on the backend to choose whether we want parents to have ALL notifications turned on for their email.  (They can opt in to receive texts.)  But as a school, it's far easier to have all email notifications turned on and ask the parents to turn them off.  They ignore our multiple requests to turn them on even though we provide ample documentation to turn them on.  Then we hear from parents "we don't hear enough about what's going on in the classroom."  Well, that's because they aren't turning the notifications on.  Please make this tool easier for schools so we can have happier parents.

Please..please...please....help us with this. It is nearly impossible to ensure that parents are setting up there notification settings correctly. Most of them don't even understand what they mean. It is fine if they want to opt out, that it there choice, but they should start with everything setup at a bare minimum level that we are allowed to set for our school.

Students also need to have default notification turned set for them!

Yes, this is a great idea, we want to be sure everyone gets notifications! We want assignments to be automatically set to default to notifications and not depend on teachers to click that one small box!
