Hi there, we recently added a check to the email services that doesn't just validate in the user preferences that they are opted into a notification, but checks that they are currently (not past) member of the roles enabled. I think that should solve for the problem here i.e. if you have enabled Parents to opt in to assignment notifications, if they are now a Past Parent, then that's a different role so they should not receive them automatically unless you added Past Parent to that notification's roles. Let me know if I need to reopen this one.
