Application shouldn't show school "Other" field as required

In the "schools" section of the application, it shows "School Name Other" as a required field, though the field should only even show if the person were to choose "Other" from the drop down.

    Admin response

Unfortunately this is not a quick-fix type of request. This is an older field that doesn't have a true "other" function. It's on our list of fields to re-work, but it is actually quite involved on the backend.

In the meantime you can use a text block to give an explanation that the "Other" field isn't required if you select your school from the drop down.

Now that this is implemented, do we have to recreate our application form or will it update the existing forms?

Two years in, is there any update on progress for resolving this issue?

There should only be one field in play here.  When I do a list I now have to list both fields to show where the applicant attends school.  There should only be one field with the school listed.  If the applicants chooses from the list or types it in it should be listed in the same field.  This is how most databases work.

We've done that. It's messy, unprofessional, and ultimately not an acceptable solution.

In the meantime, here's a workaround for this. Drag in a text block and give instructions that the "School Name Other" field isn't required if you find your school in the dropdown.

This is, in my opinion, a programming bug, and not an enhancement. How can we expect our families to make sense of this very unusual arrangements of fields. At a miniumum, the other should should NOT be required.  This should be an easy, quick fix, and as it is now a true blemish on the application process.
