Use Core Settings Placeholder for nickname|firstname throughout

In Core > Settings > Security > User Name Format, there is a placeholder {nickname|firstname} which means that if there is no Nick Name, it will choose the First Name. I would like this placeholder to be available in other areas of the software, namely onBoard Official Notes templates.

Will this preferred else first also work if we use the [nickname] placeholder when creating an email in the Official Notes>>Notifications area in Academics as well? Or does it only work in the Official notes that you can create in the top bar of the main page? Please let me know if that doesn't make sense.

The placeholders just say "Preferred name" and not "Preferred else first". I'll chat with my team to see if we can find a better way to show that they have the logic built in to default to first name. Thanks for that feedback!

I'm not finding the "Preferred Else First" placeholder available in any of my official note setups in Enrollment Management. Am I missing something?

It would be great if the labels show "preferred else first". I just check Official Notes and Decision Types and the label for the placeholders do not have that, but rather just "preferred name" only.

Hello! We recently updated the preferred name placeholder in Official Note templates so that it follows the "preferred else first" format. You can now use that placeholder to pull in the preferred name for any student who has one, and it will default to the first name for anyone who does not have one. I am going to close out this idea since Official Notes have been updated, but please submit new ideas for anywhere else in Enrollment Management where you'd like to see this change!

    Thanks,

In Official Notes through Academics, the student nickname placeholder seems to work as a "nickname else first name" placeholder. Using the same student nickname placeholder in Official Notes Notifications will pull a blank result unless there is data in the Nickname/Preferred Name field. This is very confusing! All nickname or preferred name placeholders should have the "nickname else first name" functionality throughout the site.

The format of a user's name (including a student's name in a roster, a user's name in their respective profile header, etc.) is hardcoded, depending on where you are looking.

For example, the name format on a user's profile in Core is hardcoded as FirstName "PreferredName" LastName ClassOf.

The name format in an activity/advisory/athletic roster is Last Name, FirstName (PreferredName).

The name format in an academic group (class) roster is simply FirstName LastName. All of these examples cannot be changed, and are not influenced by the User Name Format setting.

Out of all of the locations where a user's name displays, I found 2 sections which the User Name Format does change.

    The directory

    Assignments

It is important the more consistency and flexibility be provided in name formats throughout the system.

We have several records with the identical name where the "suffix" of "III" or "IV" is the distinguishing difference. Even though those records have the suffix included on the record, and the name format in Core > User Profile Settings > User Name Format are set to include suffix, it does not consistently show. For example, when you open the record in Enrollment Management, the header does not include the suffix. At the top of the Enrollment Contract where the student name is displayed, the suffix is missing. These Core name format settings should be respected EVERYWHERE within the program.

This would be so helpful with Advanced Lists. Several times when I pull lists for others or to import/export into other systems, I have to sort by Preferred Name, Copy/paste into First Name to replace then delete the column for Preferred Name and re-sort based on the list purpose.

PLEASE let us pull and use preferred name/nickname! It is very frustrating for my admission directors to see who is touring...and it only listing first names even though they have preferred name option! Some of these folks are even alumni of our school now bringing their kiddos for tours and to call them by the wrong name is VERY VERY FRUSTRATING!! If a preferred name is chosen it is the name that should be pulling!!!

Yes, yes!!! This is EXACTLY what I'd like to see made available on any communication, decision, letter, ANYTHING that utilizes placeholders. Often candidates utilize a preferred name (nickname) and I have to use First Name because everyone has that and so those who use Nicknames get thrown by the wayside and their formal names used. Would be awesome to have that field available.

It is frustrating to have to use first name in Official notes, when a pref name would be better, but because there is no default to first name, we cant choose pref name as the preferred name!
