Ability to Customize Dates in Mail Merge

I would like to be able to customize dates in mail merge (such as the Date of Letter and Formal Date of Letter) to read as dates in the future with different formatting. We want more options than January 1, 2001 or 1/1/2001. We want to be able to customize this to ouur choosing within the placeholder. This will save us time from manually typing out the date within the communication templates.

    I doubt anyone sends a letter with the 1/1/2001 format.   I do not understand why this hasn't been fixed.   The initial request was almost two years ago.  When you receive letters - how is the date formatted?????
