In our last SMS, the teachers were able to use a roster randomizer to randomly pick students for discussion. You could pull up your roster for the class and click randomize and it would cycle through and pull up the roster photo and name of one student. It took all the sense of the teacher "picking a student" out of it. There was something about watching the screen and waiting that made students forget they were about to have to answer a question or give an opinion. We'd love to see this in blackbaud.
