Why can't you allow grade book access outside the grading period?

I assured our Middle School Director it would be very easy to allow our Middle School students and parents access to the 1st trimester (which ended on 10/31) grade books today, when the 1st trimester report cards were published. But, alas, no, this doesn't work and this article gives no warning about this problem.
Please fix this. We use grade book access in short bursts so parents and students can see how the student got the trimester grade he or she earned during the marking period.

Yes! Students and parents should be able to click a grade book and choose what semester they see--similar to what teachers can do. The current process is cumbersome and non-intuitive.
We tried extending the end date for the 1st trimester - but that caused classroom assignments to appear twice in the student assignment listing. That caused so much confusion we had to shut down the grade book access.
