Does it help that you can now associate graded discussions with Topics which has much more robust functionality including the text editor, attaching files, embedding. You can add an assignment widget and then in the assignment widget select a graded discussion. Of course the thread won't display expanded and embedded in the Topic, it would take you to the discussion itself, but that may be ok?
