New 11:59 assignment due time causes anxiety - hide it when at the default and/or allow school default Merged

I really appreciated the rapid response to the challange of remote learning by adding in a due time for assignments. It is really helpful in many cases. However, not all teachers need or want this feature. I would propose if a teacher doesn't edit this time that the system surpress showing the time mimicing the previous behavior. Some students feel extress stress when they see a time and some of our teachers feel that showing 11:59pm encourages students to stay up late working on assignments.

It would also be great to provide for default due times at a school and teacher level.

We implemented this morning the 2 fixes we came to agreement on with customers - hide the 11:59 default in the list views, only display a time if it is different from the default and, we added the ability to also set the due time differently on online submission assignments (previously there was only one mark late at field shared by all sections).

I, for one, am very happy there is a due time field now. One of the big issues our parents were having previously is that assignments we not showing in the order they were due for the day on the assignment calendar. This new field now gives us the ability to address this issue.

The only challenge now is that you have to REQUIRE your teachers to now define a time, and that can prove to be a challenge when it come to adoption and consistency (which is leading to Shandor's issue).

My suggestion for improving this feature is to make the default due time for an assignment be the beginning of the scheduled class time for that class on the due date. The system is aware of the class meetings and times, so why not have it default to the beginning of class for that day? When turning in paper homework, teachers typically have that turned in at the beginning of class, so why not do the same for digital assignments? I want to keep the due time field so that teachers have the ability to override the default in instances that this would apply, and it should also go to the system default time in the event something was due on a non-class meeting day and the teacher did not define a time (albeit, and unlikely situation).

Angela, I do appreciate how responsive you have been to the community at this time. Thanks for all you are doing. Please let me know if you would like to discuss my idea further.

thank you for posting this hear so I can engage and get some more clarity. As always customer input is really helpful. So just to get a little more info....the default due date has always been either what the teacher entered or if nothing entered, the assigned date. At that point, at 11:59 if the student hadn't submitted it would be automatically marked overdue by the system. That hasn't changed. We went with being transparent with the fact that the system was considering that the due time so students would know, given now especially that teachers have the ability to change it and they will see assigned with other due times. If it is hidden from them on some but others show a time, will it not raise questions on their part about when it is actually due? Do they understand that the due time is the end of the due date today when it says due 4/27/2020? When they sort their assignment list by due datetime and there are multiple on the same date some with times and some without is the expectation that the 11:59 will still be taken into account so they will be at the end and it just isn't displayed? Or are you ultimately asking for due dates not to be enforced as well - so that there's no concept of overdue? Would love to set up a group call with a few of you if possible to vet the options. Let me know if you're willing so we can figure out the best options thanks!
