Give teachers the ability to mark an assignment as "Submitted", not just options that imply it was not submitted.

There is lag time between when something is submitted and when something is graded. So, if the only tag an assignment can have is related to it not being turned in OR graded, then students and parents cannot track if something has been submitted and they're just waiting on it to be graded or if it hasn't been submitted and the teacher just hasn't changed the status to reflect that. It would allow students and parents to differentiate exactly what they have not AND have completed.

In an ideal world, this "Submitted" label for students would also toggle off any "Missing Assignment" label that was previously sent out by the teacher. It would be confusing for a student or an advisor to see a Missing and Submitted label for the same assignment.

Hey @Morgan Kunze! I'm going to hook you up here with @Ben Leddy who has taken over the LMS product and can update folks following here on the latest plans.

@AngelaAddison, thanks for your response below. With this year's changes, we have been using the "collected" button but it does not trigger a status change on the student view. Would it be possible to add a "submitted" or "grade pending" or similar status that would show on the student side for non-system submissions? Currently our teachers are just un-publishing a lot of their non-system assignments because the "overdue" badges do not accurately reflect the assignment status for non-system work.

To clarify: I recognize that this can be seen from the teacher's end in their Gradebook, but students/parents cannot see that "S" in the "See Grade Detail" portion, which is what I think would be helpful. Since they CAN already see "Exempt" and "Missing" statuses, this seems like it would be an easy patch.

Yes - I see that it auto-marks it "S" within the Gradebook for online assignments, which is helpful for teachers, but this type of feature would be very beneficial if Students and Parents could see that "S" somewhere as well (perhaps Assignment details since that would differentiate it from Progress, as that's where Graded items go). If this could automatically happen for online assignments but also give the teachers to manually enter "S" for non-online assignments so that it is visible to students and parents, not just teachers, this would be helpful. Otherwise, students and their parents have a harder time tracking work they have/have not submitted UNTIL it has been graded, which naturally has a lag time - especially in a year when teachers are as busy as they are due to COVID adjustments.

Hi there, we added last year on online assignments and assessments that we would auto-mark it submitted since the system knows. And teachers could then compare the ones with the 's' submitted status in their gradebook but no grade as waiting to be graded. We also actually initially included ones that students marked submitted but got backlash that wasn't appropriate as it isn't always true. We have plans in our new designs for gradebook and assignment details to add a 'collected' status so teachers can track the ones that aren't systematically able to be flipped to submitted, is that what this is for? Otherwise if there are additional tweaks being requested for the exisiting functionality can you elaborate? thanks!
