Nicknames on Seating Chart

I am so happy that we have the seating chart and that it allows for us to see pictures. It would be great if the name shown was the nickname (if they have one).

    Admin response

With the 1/11/22 release, names will now show as PreferredName LastName if a preferred name has been entered. If none exists, FirstName Lastname will display.

So important! We've set up two separate custom admin-only fields to track different cases of "official" name vs. preferred name so that we can be sure to display the correct preferred name on forms, etc., while still maintaining a record of someone's given or previous name(s). Mu suggestion would be for preferred name to be the default name displayed in every case - it's preferred after all - but if that's not feasible, it should at least be an option.

So many inconsistencies across the Blackbaud products for how names show. Some can be controlled by the school, some controlled by the teacher, and some set by Blackbaud with no way to change them. Please let us control how our user's names are displayed!

Please allow us to choose to show Preferred name. I just had a trans student in my office very upset that their first name was showing (some teachers project this on the board so students know where to sit).

Sounds like a great addition to the newly designed display preferences section. It could be a separate option for naming convention on the seating chart....OR...it could format names based off the preference the teacher set for displaying names in the gradebook.

You would just need to add Last Name, preferred name and Preferred name Last Name as options. You would not have to include preferred name in parenthesis if using it in place of first name.

Many teachers would appreciate this as it would shrink the space needed for the student names on their screen and allow them to see more assignments at one time. Students would probably prefer it also because it would eliminate the possibility of being called by their embarrassing first name in class instead of their nickname. :-)
