Ways to track student participation in Discussions

Hello. A high school English teacher at my school asked me to pass on these suggestions for the Discussion feature available through Topics on class pages:

I've been using My-DE as an academic discussion forum, thinking that it would be simpler to keep everything in one place rather than expand to something like a Ning, which I know other English teachers use. But there are two basic features that I think are lacking:

1. Using the Discussion feature on Topics, it should be possible to display, for a given thread, the names of students enrolled in that class who have  NOT posted.

2. There should be a central page for each student on which you can view all their Discussion posts for your class.

Adding to point 2: Our teachers would like a way to view one students Discussion responses in one place. They separate Discussions for "Talk about Chapter 1" .. "What happened in Chapter 2" .. "Did you like Chapter 3?", etc, and don't want to have to click in every Discussion and copy/paste somewhere else to then read all of 1 student's responses.

Great suggestions Bill, and I know this is almost 5 years old but it's suddenly even more relevant than before.
