Dropbox needs to still be enabled even if the grade is "incomplete" and marked zero

Students who find out that they have work missing from a grade of zero/marked incomplete cannot then upload work to the dropbox. They need to be able to upload work even after the grade has been marked incomplete. They have no way of getting the missing/incomplete work to the teacher without that function.

    Hi Amy,

I had one of our Product Support Leads test it out and it was still working as expected. Students can still submit an online submission even if marked incomplete and given a 0 grade. If you are still having trouble, can you please report to Support with the details to reproduce? Our intention was definitely not to take this functionality away with the summer improvements to gradebook. So you may have uncovered a bug with your scenario that we're missing.

    Thanks!

    Jackie

It appears with the update over the summer this feature is NO LONGER implemented. Now we have to clear the grade  and it seems we also have to click to allow resubmit (even if they haven't submitted anything.) This is a step back.

    Hi All!

With the April 6th release, your Students with missing work will now be able to submit an online submission through onCampus even if the due date has passed and a grade (such as 0) has been given.

This release does not change the work flow for students who have already submitted a file. Teachers will still need to allow those students to resubmit if the wrong file accidentally got attached. I do have my UX designer considering alternative workflows for the future.

Thank you again for bringing this teacher frustration to my attention!

Quick clarification with the new release.  What if the student accidentally hits submit and realizes they have not submitted the correct file or all of the necessary files.  This happens quite often.  Does this release handle this use case?

    Hi Again,

Great news! The team took on this update as part of the April 6th release!

We took a slightly different (and hopefully better) approach than what I described in my 3/10 comment. Rather than put the onus on the Teacher to have to individually select if a Student will be able to submit missing work we changed the logic to always allow submissions if a file has NOT been attached even if the due date has passed and the Assignment has been Graded and/or marked Incomplete or Missing.

The timestamp will still inform the Teacher of when a submission was made and will display as RED if it is late. Then it is up to the Teachers discretion if a new grade should be awarded.

Thanks again for bringing this workflow issue to my attention!

I'm in full agreement with what Erin Whitaker said:

"I had a similar request idea in another post but will chime in here. I would like to see the option of no matter what grade is typed in, teachers can have the option to allow students to resubmit. A checkbox to allow for resubmissions when creating the assignment would be a nice feature.  This way if a student received a low grade on an assignment, I can give them feedback and require them to resubmit. It would be nice if all submissions were timestamped, cataloged, and saved so that we can see the history of submissions for a particular assignment. "

Students should be able to turn in as many submissions, as often, with timestamps.  Teachers can then choose what to grade and there's no workflow interruptions.

    Hi All!

Thank you for the prompt feedback! I'm going to bring it back to the Team to size up the level of effort now that you've clarified the issues for me.

I think we'll be able to get a quick fix in to allow individuals to submit make up work even if a grade of 0 has been entered. Saving revisions and notifications when work has been submitted will be a bit more involved so will likely have to come in a later phase. But I'll get the team thinking about it.

    Thanks!

To your question, Jackie: Would it work if upon entering the grade of zero, we let the Teacher determine if make-up work and submissions are permitted on a per student basis? In effect, letting the Teacher allow that online assignment pipeline to remain open even though a grade of 0 has been entered?

    YES!! That would be perfect.

Yes - that would be perfect.  If the teacher could still allow the student to submit it even with a zero and the teacher would get a flag that something was submitted, that would be great!    I would be great if the student could see the grade for the assignment when they are on the assignment submission screen.   The student shows the grade as completed, but the student should be able to see their grade and the teachers comments from that screen.

    Thank you

Jackie, do you mean configuring the assignment settings in such a way that allows the teacher to determine on an individual basis whether or not the dropbox should remain open for a particular student? If so, I think this would resolve it. We ran into this in many places, and were forced to create new assignments instead. One thing I did notice that was good, was with the Assessments, a teacher can “extend” an assessment and allow a student to submit it later. If this concept can also be applied to online submission assignments and graded discussions, that would be very helpful, I think.

    Hi There!

Thank you so much for bringing this workflow issue to my attention. I want to make sure I understand the problem.

The way it works today is that onCampus will allow a student to submit an online assignment if the due date has passed. In my testing, it will also allow the student to submit if the assignment has been marked as Incomplete.

However, it will NOT allow a submission if a grade has been entered. That includes a grade of 0. We consider the "transaction" as done and the student no longer sees the option to submit. Which would prevent student's from "sneaking" in a submission after the grade has been submitted.

Would it work if upon entering the grade of zero, we let the Teacher determine if make-up work and submissions are permitted on a per student basis? In effect, letting the Teacher allow that online assignment pipeline to remain open even though a grade of 0 has been entered?

Let me know what you think!

    Thanks!

Yes. As well, the incomplete/missing work should be transferred to the new quarter or have a red alert that there are unfinished assignments in the previous period so the student can't "forget" about them.

Make sure the update allows for multiple submissions

Can we also add that it needs to continue to be open even after students have submitted work.  Once they submit, it closes, unless the teacher reopens it
