A teacher was using a different grading program in the past that converted grades to percentages in the program.  It made it easier for teachers to see "at a glance" how the students were doing individually and on a particular assignment for the scores to be represented as percentages.  It also helped save the teachers time from converting this on their own as they must when choosing the percentages calculation method.
