We would like to be able to display preferred name only, particularly in the directory. We can suppress first name in the rosters, we can customize a report card with preferred name, but we are unable to suppress it in the student directory. Basically, we would like the ability to control what name is displayed anywhere a name might be used. This is important for students who may be gender transitioning, but aren't old enough to have an official name change.
Yes we really really need a way to suppress the legal name from view (unless necessary like Transcript and that sort of thing).
One of our trans students joined the school after he already had a preferred name, but we have to enter their legal name until they get an official name change. The student has not used their dead name in years but we had to include it. He's very shy and has only really talks to one teacher. He expressed how embarrassing and upsetting it is to see their old name whenever the teacher decides to print out a list from the roster or if the teacher opens the gradebook and shares it on the screen in front of the entire class. Potential slip ups could happen on the first day of school when teachers start calling role and read out the students name without carefully looking at the list to see that oh this student uses a completely different name.
It's nobody's business what a student has written on their birth certificate. What matters is what the student goes by and what they respond to.
Places we have flagged that we want to start seeing preferred name is the Student Summary field when creating lists. Also the roster, the Gradebook, and gradebook reports like the Empty Assignment Grid Report that teachers print out.
It would be great if we could more than one option when using name formats. For example, some items would use first name for rosters, or transcripts, while rosters for athletics would use preferred name as the default.
Especially needed for teacher name on new report cards and for author name on official notes
This is coming up for discussion more and more frequently, especially on screens that teachers use. Multiple areas display First Name regardless of the format selected in Core -> Users -> User Profile Settings ->User name formats (in our case, {nickname|firstname} {lastname} is selected). For example, teachers still see first name when clicking launch gradebook, in report card grading, or when taking attendance. As a result, subs have accidentally called students by their first/legal name instead of their preferred name. This can create a great deal of frustration for some students/parents. It seems these areas should also honor the chosen user name format.
We ABSOLUTELY need to have this adjusted. We have a number of transgender students who need and deserve their privacy and should not have to have their dead name freely available for everyone to see. It is very disappointing that this is even a conversation that we have to vote and comment on.
I agree completely with Maria and Brian. This is necessary and important for us to be an inclusive community.
In addition to the ability to display the preferred name everywhere, we also need the ability to suppress the display of the first name. In particular, we don't want to display the first name on the student's contact card in the General Information area.
