As per the Knowledgebase, the descriptive school year basically has no purpose or usefulness right now. We use an alternative calendar in addition to the regular one (religious schools). To put this on report cards, we have to create new templates every year with a different text box. This isn't how the report card system was designed to be used and causes other problems re: settings access for the correct template by year, not to mention extra work.
