I would like teachers to only have access to preferred names, not "first names" as a way to better support transgender students. I would like teachers to only see preferred names in directories and class lists as a way to not accidentally misname students.
By extension: I'd like all directories to hide first name and default to preferred name.
This is coming up for discussion more and more frequently, especially on screens that teachers use. Multiple areas display First Name regardless of the format selected in Core -> Users -> User Profile Settings ->User name formats (in our case, {nickname|firstname} {lastname} is selected). For example, teachers still see first name when clicking launch gradebook, in report card grading, or when taking attendance. As a result, subs have accidentally called students by their first/legal name instead of their preferred name. This can create a great deal of frustration for some students/parents. It seems these areas should also honor the chosen user name format.

Please allow us to hide first names. As Brian mentioned, this is crucial to ensure all of our students are known and valued.
It is not currently possible to make the first name field unpublished on the contact card's General Information area. This missing setting is needed to support transgender and non-binary students.
