We stopped printing a paper directory (alphabetized by last name) and are making our parents use the directory in the app. However, we have had a lot of parents complain that they can't type one letter of a last name and see a page of results, almost imitating how they would use a paper directory.
It would be nice for parents to be able to search this way when they're not really sure of how to spell a last name of a parent or what grade a student is in.
I agree with all of this - making the directory searchable by a first or last name would make the directory much more functional for all users! This is especially true when you're looking for a user that doesn't appear in the first 200 results that the directory displays. If you have a large student population the kids whose last name appears in the second half of the alphabet never show up in the directory results which is where the search by last name (give me everyone whose last name begins with R) would be VERY helpful!
The problem goes beyond inability to pull up a list by first letter of the last name. Say you want to search for someone with the last name "Scott" -- the directory pulls up every person with that first name, last name, middle name.
YES!!! It is counter intuitive to have a "Search All Fields" button and not have the ability to search at least some individual fields.
