California schools have to calculate student's Gpa's for their Sophomore and Junior year to submit to the California Student Aid Commission, so they may be considered for a Cal Grant ( free money for CA students who meet income and GPA criteria and attend a California college or University).
We have to calculate this by hand every year and create a spreadsheet with student's information such as gender, address, date of graduation etc.. California based SIS systems have this built in as a program.
