We have turned off messaging because we do not have such control. Our school, like most, uses email regularly and without the ability to regulate messaging by role, we cannot phase in usage of messaging. In other words, we can't adopt messaging and therefore it is useless.
I think this is a very important option. Teachers want to be able to message parents, but if parents and students can post messages we do not have control over what is being said.
We have messaging turned off for this same reason. We do not want parents to have the capability to communicate with other parents and/or students.

This is an excellent idea! It addresses one of the issues we have with using messaging at all.
