When preparing for the coming term, a number of classes and groups need to be set to allow for some level of early access for teachers and or students. Going through Core > Security > Group Page Access, I can configure this.
However, if I check a particular class or group's current dates, that class or group is immediately marked as having custom access (C) and it sets the start date of access to today's date. Which is less than ideal if I wanted it to be later than today's date, or even not to change until I actually change it.
I have been informed by support that I can't look at a class or group page's access settings without this happening, and I believe that a) this is a bug and b) a potentially problematic behavior (do I really want to accidentally give students access to the roster by checking to make sure that they don't have access?).
Just tripped over this while trying to figure out why some of our parents couldn't see the Community Groups they were members of.
If this is "working as designed", then the design itself is flawed beyond belief or description.
Update on my ticket regarding this behavior:
"Our internal team has reviewed the case and they concluded this is working as designed. The dates for the individual class and the overall dates for the school level will be different. They have committed to update the article adding a note to clarify that."
The better update would be to not change data just because you looked at it.
At one time, it just copied the default settings (roles and dates; currently it just copies roles), which was super convenient if you had some Summer classes you wanted to publish, you could set the default, choose your classes/groups, then set the default back to be for S1 before you set up your S1 classes. Moving back to that model even would be an improvement.
I couldn't agree more! And I love Jeanne's suggestions.
Yes, just had a huge mess up in our system last week because of this. It caused our school A LOT of problems. Blackbaud admitted that this is a flaw in their system. =/
I love that we're bringing philosophy and physics to bear in this idea...
I have to agree...I've been bitten more than a few times by going to a group page to check that the access dates are set the way I want them, and then I'm forced to adjust them again because I've just made them have custom access.
I'm hoping BB can figure out a better way for us to designate groups for custom access...maybe a nice SKY list of groups where we can select a checkbox to create custom access, and then a field for the access dates???
