It should be change to Preferred Name versus nick name given todays global environment. Nick name sounds childish and in some instances could be considered insulting.
Also, we need ability to modify howe name is displayed on profile icon (upper right corner). Currently it is only FirstName LastName. We need ability to change it for same reasons other schools mention.
As pointed out in the comment below by Jeff Harrison, schools want to honor a student's name change--particularly when working with non-binary or transitioning students--even if it hasn't been changed legally (yet). Additionally, international student often prefer to choose an American name to go by. By definition a nickname is "a familiar or humorous name given to a person or thing instead of or as well as the real name." By only having the option of a "nickname" rather than "preferred name" we are sending a message that it's not the student's 'real name' and, thus, undermining the name as part of their identity.
If Blackbaud is unwilling to make this change or add 'preferred name' as a separate option, I respectfully request to understand what the reasoning is.
Just switched to the onCampus product. First day of classes and we already had a non-binary student almost in tears because a teacher used their legal name instead of the name the identify with! We cannot just change their name in the system because all legal record must have their legal name.
Thanks for your patience, this was solved May 2020.
