We are a Google school and teachers compose comments in Google Docs and then copy/paste into the Comments section of a report card. When pasting from Google, the Italic formatting comes in as <span>word in italics</span>. If you save that Google Doc as a Word file and then copy/paste from word, the formatting comes in as <i>word in italics</i> as desired.
