In the Gradebook, create a Display Option that removes OVERDUE in the parent or student view.

If teachers are not vigilant in putting in grades, the assignment appears to be overdue from the student and teacher perspective. If there were an option to remove Overdue when there is no grade at all, that would alleviate this concern. It kind of alarms parents.

    Please, please help us find a workaround for this. Other users have suggested creation of a "submitted" button that would trigger a status change on the student side. Tracking these threads:
